🌱 Growing instructions
- Cold Stratification (Required for spring planting): Place seeds in a damp paper towel inside a sealed bag and refrigerate for 30 days before sowing. This mimics winter conditions and dramatically improves germination rates.
- Starting Indoors: After stratification, start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before your last expected frost date.
- Direct Sow: Direct sow outdoors after all danger of frost has passed.
- Sowing Depth: Do NOT cover seeds — press gently onto the soil surface. Seeds require light to germinate.
- Germination Temperature: 60–70°F (15–21°C)
- Germination Time: 10–21 days
- Thinning/Spacing: Thin or transplant to 8–12 inches apart
- Light: Full Sun required — blooms will not open in shade
- Watering: Water sparingly; allow soil to dry between waterings. Overwatering will cause root rot.
- Soil: Well-draining, sandy or gravelly soil is essential. Does not tolerate heavy clay or waterlogged conditions.
- Fertilizer: Low-fertility soil preferred; avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers which promote foliage over blooms.
